George Stanford, Singer/Songwriter
When it came time to record George’s second independent release, 'Las Palmas' the singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist knew one thing for sure: It was finally time to shake off that major label stigma… Getting dropped by Mercury definitely wasn’t the end, but it wasn’t the quick comeback, flash in the pan manifesto expected by the DIY crowd either. IT IS about paying your dues all over again, resetting, and experiencing life without encumbered expectations – allowing your art to live and breathe unshackled.
Life is a struggle to be shared with friends and love ones, but as 'Las Palmas' captures in an altruistic way, the setting of that life - the context of living - can be just as influential.
Though grateful for the warm reviews that previous album Big Drop (Mercury/Universal
2008) produced, George was never comfortable with the expectations of having to craft smooth pop songs for major radio crossover. On The Roll Away EP (Independent 2010) reviews called his first self-release 'rootsy Americana' and 'twangy folk.' In his eyes,
George Stanford as an artist has always ridden the line that incorporates some
Americana, Philly soul, a touch of classic rock, horn lines, and always a heap of honesty. On the new Las Palmas EP, he once again sets out to prove that earnest integrity using all the sounds available to his palette yields the most loving results.
Finding himself far from his native Philadelphia in Los Angeles after the fallout with his former label, George quickly grasped the concept of self-preservation and along with his wife Nikole and loving dog Roscoe, moved back into the small bungalow in Hollywood where they’d stayed while he recorded Big Drop. Located several blocks south of
Sunset Blvd on a perpendicular crossroad called Las Palmas Blvd, an answer to creative continuation, a new found music scene and cheap rent manifested itself.
'The small house was a funky old craigslist find. The property was apparently at one time an asparagus farm, and our home was where the workers slept. It had old pine
floors and high ceilings, and when you sang or played guitar in there, the rooms sounded really nice…it had a vibe like a clubhouse in a Steinbeck novel that was just conducive to making music...kind of rough around the edges, but what it lacked in modern comfort, it more than made up for with its California charm, cheap rent, and most importantly a place to play with no noise complaints. It was tucked back off of the street, and felt like a creative safe haven from the sketchiness of the surrounding neighborhood.'
It seemed almost like an after-thought compared to the building that hid it from the street, and you probably wouldn’t have noticed it if he didn’t bring you back there for a recording session or to hang out...and George brought many musicians back there to make music and hang. Those musicians and artists became fast friends in a Hollywood scene immersed with writers and actors and the typical weirdoes. Writing, creating and collaborating developed into a large group of participants known as the Beachwood Rockers Society. Derived from the classic canyon enclave found in the heart of
Hollywood, members included Lissie (Sony/UK Paste Magazine's #1 best new solo artist of 2010), Truth and Salvage Co. (Silver Arrow/Sony) and Andy Clockwise (Schizo
Pop) to name a few. As usual, George garnered respect among his peers, and stood out from the crowd with his well-crafted songs and musicianship.
Penned during his time on Las Palmas, George tapped musicians Matty Alger (Eminem,
Esperenza Spaulding), John Thomas (Bruce Hornsby, Albert Lee), Lissie, Spencer
Wright (bass guitar), and longtime friend and musical co-conspirator Tim Sonnefeld
(mixing/mastering) to help him round out the new EP. |
