Charles Corby; composer: piano and vocals
Hailing from Melbourne, Charles Corby set out to deliver his own blend of hard rock and classical, creating eclectic, well balanced and passionate songs sitting somewhere in between conventional structure and a compositional approach. In terms of influences, this Australian artist owes to film scores and classical composers as much as to visionary pop and rock musicians such as Bjork, Dido, Smashing Pumpkins, just to name a few.
Charles is a perfectionist when it comes to his productions, striving to reach a well-balanced compromise between the elements of each song, in order to reflect is personal values as much as possible. New EP coming soon
At what age did you realize you wanted to pursue music?
I actually grew up listening to pretty much no music, except my mother played classical stuff all the time. Which obviously at the time, I didn't think was too cool. As soon as we got a piano and I started mucking around on it, writing my own stuff cause I didn't know anything else to play, I kind of realized my passion for it. I remember at school, that I would be doing like 3 music subjects at once and that was really awesome because I felt like a sponge and that I just wanted to soak up absolutely everything I could about the subject. It basically just sort of snowballed since then and it's really all I focus on.
Who are your biggest musical influences?
Well I was brainwashed with classical music for years without realizing it obviously, and then that sort of started showing in what I was writing. Everything I write is primarily based around the piano. I very strongly believe place that the piano parts should be fairly intricate and not just chords in rhythmic variations. I like Bjork because she uses string parts as the primary instrument or as a key role, whereas I think it's very easy to write a song and then think ‘hmm lets chuck in a string part in the background'. I mean, obviously it depends on the genre but I'm very classically influenced. I used to like Plumb, Dido, Damien Rice, Goo Goo Dolls, Evanescence, All-American Rejects, Cold War Kids, now I love anything that's passionate from whatever genre.
What do you like most about being a musician?
Making stuff feels really organic to me and because it all comes from a fairly honest place, I mean like not just trying to write the next 'big radio hit'. I like it because I have a medium to be able to work through stuff therapeutically. But really, I think one of the biggest things that keeps me going, has got to be the challenge. This industry changes every day and it's so easy just to think 'I'll do it later' or whatever, but I feel like whenever I say that I'm just getting older and it's a missed opportunity. That's why I really appreciate interviews like this on a whole bunch of levels; it has nothing to do with the money or the egotistical nature of it. I think whether people admit it or not, everyone wants to feel like they belong, and to feel respected, and I think that's really what the chase for fame is.
Who would be your dream collaboration- You and ____ in the studio or on stage together?
I'd really love to work with Plumb at the moment, who is this cool Christian music artist from the US. A whole bunch of her songs have been really influential to me for ages, and I just recently got her new album which is amaze-balls. I'm not religious but Christian music is great because it's really passionate. Also I saw a couple of interviews with her on some show and she's just a really brutally honest woman and I love it. This would be a studio collaboration though she has an enormous stage presence as well which I'm really interested in. Yeah, definitely Plumb.
